Can you fund our projects and/or give us free hosting?

Burma Online is an independent, non-profit initiative that does not currently have any external funding.  Income is only generated through the collection of the very modest, single-payment hosting fees, which are then used to pay for extending the life of the hosting for all sites involved.  There are no administrative deductions and all staff work as volunteers. ...

If I want my own domain name, why do I have to pay more?

Individual domains are registered separately through other companies, so there is a cost associated with this. The current fee is 600 baht per year, so a site can be registered with its own domain name for 3400 baht for four years (1000 hosting plus 600 times four). ...

Why is hosting so much cheaper than other companies?

Because we're not a company, we're a non-profit capacity building initiative. By registering a generic host name and distributing sub domains it makes it much more economical for everyone involved. And, if more people sign up than the hosting originally cost, then the hosting will continue on for all sites for longer - everyone wins. ...

I'm not based in Thailand, am I still eligible for hosting?

Absolutely - it is the Burma connection that is important, not your geographical location. Although we can only offer training within Thailand, we have already provided hosting and/or training to individuals and groups based (or with branch offices) in China, Vietnam, Cambodia, India, Bangladesh, the UK, Canada and inside Burma. Please contact us to discuss the logistics involved....

So you will set up and run a website for me?

No, Burma Online is an initiative based on DIY (Do It Yourself) , not HSEDIFY (Have Someone Else Do It For You)! The idea is for you to have your own voice and get your own message out there, not for others to speak on your behalf. So no, we can help you to get you up and running but you will have to research, edit and update the site yourself....

Welcome to Burma Online!

Burma Online is a portal for websites developed and sustained by organisations, groups or individuals associated with Burma. It is the result of an ongoing, non-profit, grassroots capacity-building initiative providing advocacy, online awareness, planning advice, introductory web design training and very low cost web hosting to those on the Thai-Burma border and beyond.

Those with a Burma connection deserve to be visible and have their own voices heard within local, national and international communities. The Burma Online initiative helps individuals and organisations to think about developing the basic technical and advocacy skills necessary to collect information, plan their design and structure, launch their own sites and update them themselves. Once launched, their news, views and images can viewed by any interested party with an internet connection anywhere in the world. Registration is held overseas so content is not controlled or restricted by the SPDC.

Training can be held (subject to availability) in Chiang Mai, Mae Hong Son, Sangkhlaburi, Mae Sot and various other places on the Thai side of the Thai-Burma border on request.  Hosting is available internationally.  Twenty three sites are already live, with over a dozen more actively under development.

Burma Online has been running since the beginning of 2008 and will continue until (at least) 2014.  Please look around and learn more about us, read the FAQs about what we do, or go straight to the websites that have already been developed.
